Simplifying Medical Gas Procurement for the NHS

We’ve recently collaborated with NHS London Procurement Partnership (NHS LPP) to launch the new Total Pharmaceutical Gas Solutions framework. The framework is designed to make it easier to source gases and related services for members across NOE CPC, NHS LPP, and the wider public sector. It aims to support eligible Participating Authorities in the procurement of essential medical gases and services used in a variety of healthcare settings.

Medical gases are vital medicines for clinical care, playing an essential role in acute, chronic, and emergency care across numerous departments. With this framework, we aim to make the procurement of these critical products easier and more efficient, ensuring that NHS hospitals and other healthcare settings can meet their needs without unnecessary delays or complexities.

A key component in the development of this framework was the close collaboration between NHS LPP and NOE CPC. As NHS procurement organisations, our shared goal is to reduce duplication across the market while saving time and money for the NHS.

Paul Dunn-Jones, NOE CPC’s Pharmacy Category Manager, commented on the partnership:

“Working with NHS LPP has been a highly productive experience. Together, we have leveraged our expertise to create a framework that addresses the needs and ensures the timely availability of medical gases across the NHS.”

The framework offers flexible contracting options, allowing users to choose between Direct Award and Further Competition procurement routes. This flexibility ensures that each Participating Authority can select the best option for their specific requirements.

The framework covers a wide range of services, including:

  • Medical Liquid Oxygen
  • Medical Gas Cylinders and Tracking
  • Nitric Oxide Therapy
  • Ambulance Medical Gas Cylinders and Tracking

Nilton Melo, NHS LPP’s Pharmacy and Medicines Procurement Category Lead, emphasised:

“We’ve worked closely with many stakeholders to make sure this framework fits the needs of everyone. We listened to feedback to ensure the solutions are practical and ready for today and the future.”
